The Russian superstar wants to bright lights and big dollars. Can Montreal entice him?

The spotlight has been shining brightly on pending unrestricted free agent Artemi Panarin for the better part of a year now. With the Columbus Blue Jackets season over and the opening of free agency just over a month from now, hockey fans are bound to get a steady diet of “Where will he sign?” articles between now and July 1st.

In that spirit… will he sign with the Montreal Canadiens? Should the Canadiens pursue the Russian superstar, and would he even be interested in bringing his game up North?

The odds are that Panarin will sign either with a warm climate franchise like the Florida Panthers, a big market franchise like the New York Rangers or, his former team, the Chicago Blackhawks. So, what are the chances that he has an about face and elects to head north of the Canadian border and La Belle Province?

There’s no doubt that Panarin would provide the Habs with a much-needed boost up front. The right-shooting left winger would supplant Tomas Tatar and/or Jonathon Drouin on the left side on the team’s top line and first powerplay unit. His 28 goals and 87 points in 79 games during the 2018-19 regular season would have been tops on the Habs in both categories. Again… there’s no doubt that he’d give the team an offensive boost, but at what cost?

According to Evolving Wild’s offseason contract projection spreadsheet, Panarin could command north of $11.3 million annually on a long-term deal. That’s a steep price to pay, especially when you consider that the Habs are already on the hook for $10.5 annually for the next seven years to pay superstar goaltender Carey Price. Sure, Panarin and Price are world class players, but can Habs general manager Marc Bergevin convince ownership to commit more than $20 million annually to just two players?

Then there’s the team’s cap situation to consider…

Currently the Habs sit roughly $10 million below the NHL’s $79.5 million salary cap with the cap rising to a confirmed $83 million for 2019-20. Assuming he’ll spend up to the cap, Bergevin will have roughly $13.5 million to spend this offseason. No problem, right? Not so fast…

Karl Alzner – $4,625,000

Alzner seems like the most likely candidate as he struggled to even stay in the lineup in 2018-19, was placed on waivers and ultimately played out the season with the AHL’s Laval Rocket. Should Bergevin manage to rid himself of Alzner, Weise and Shaw, he’d have ample room to join the Panarin sweepstakes.

The problem is that that’s an AWFUL lot of shuffling all for the risk of missing out on the horse race for Panarin on July 1st. Of course, Bergevin could then turn his attention to another Blue Jacket set to hit free agency: Matt Duchene. Duchene has been linked to the Habs before but… well, that’s another article for another time.

When Montreal Canadiens General Manager Marc Bergevin held end of season 2018-19 press conference back on April 9, he spoke of many of the positives going the team has into the 2019-20 season. For starters, the 2018-19 season saw a 25 points improvement from the prior season. He spoke about how the Canadiens have the 9th youngest team in the 31-team NHL. Also worth noting, in the upcoming 2019 NHL Draft, the Canadiens have 3 of the first 50 picks.

Or that the up and coming teams such as Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers, won’t surpass the Canadiens next season with parity being so tight in the NHL. And yes it’s true Habs have lots of new prospects joining the team suck as Jesperi Kotkaniemi , Nik Suzuki, and Ryan Poehling, these players are still in the devlopment phase.

Marc Bergevin is now entering year 8 as General Manager of the Canadiens, the 5th longest tenure in Canadiens history. In Bergevin’s first 7 seasons, the Canadiens have only won 3 playoff series. And the team has missed the playoffs three of the last four seasons. Patience is running out quickly for the GM. Let’s hope his optimism holds true, especially for suffering Canadiens fans.

Gordie Howe Hattrick: Gordie Howe, also referred to as Mr Hockey, is a legend of the sport. A Gongshow: When a game gets swamped with many fights, lots of goals, and many penalties – all of the good stuff – and just gets completely out-of-hand by all accounts, it is referred to as a Gongshow. Games that are merely high-scoring are often referred to as Barn Burners.

There you have it: a whole batch of hockey slang definitions to help you understand some of the terms thrown around at the rink. But what’s most impressive about the allure of the sport is how other elements of pop culture have either borrowed hockey slang or just used to sport as the basis of new slang.

Pop culture making use of hockey in its slang

There are many episodes of series, movie scenes, and even song lyrics which reference the sport of hockey, its common occurrences, and even some of the legends of the game – most commonly Wayne ‘The Great One’ Gretzky. But throughout all of pop culture, it is, in fact, the cultural phenomenon of poker which has grasped onto the most-used hockey slang, making many references to its iconic players.

The most common way in which hockey slang breaks into the world of poker, particularly Texas Hold’em, is through hands being denoted by legendary jersey numbers. The most obvious one is the 9-9 hand, which in poker is referred to as ‘The Gretzky’ – you can go on to land a hattrick if you flop a third nine. The hand 8-8 has an old school reference to the great Eric Lindros, who wore the number 88, but newer poker players often call a winning hand of eights ‘The Great 8’ in reference to Alex Ovechkin.

Have the Montreal Canadiens contributed to hockey slang?

The Montreal Canadiens are the oldest team in North American hockey, having been founded in 1909. With a huge Canadian fan base that boasts both English and French speakers, many great terms have been voiced around Centre Bell, which are often translations of English terms into French. However, the greatest term integrated into the hockey community by the Montreal Canadiens may just be their nickname.

The Canadiens are known as the Habs; a nickname thought to have been forged by a mistaken US reporter. In 1924, Tex Rickard stated that the ‘H’ in Montreal’s logo meant ‘habitant’ which was a French term that referenced the farmers of Quebec. In reality, the ‘H’ in the logo stands for ‘Hockey’ from the team’s name ‘Club de Hockey Canadien.’ Viewed as the French team of Montreal at the time, the club adopted the nickname, and it continues to stand to this day.

It should come as no surprise that the incredibly diverse and exciting game of hockey has invited fans to be so creative with its slang, but it may have come as a surprise to see the sport rub off in pop-culture as well.

The 2018/19 season has been much better than expected for the Montreal Canadiens, and if they end up making it to the playoffs, it will mark an excellent campaign. Both Jonathan Drouin, Phillip Danault, Max Domi are having career-seasons, Brendan Gallagher scored 30 goals by the 70-game mark, Shea Weber has become the leader that the team needs, and Carey Price surpassed Jacques Plante as the Canadiens’ all-time wins leader.

A lot of the pride that comes with being a Habs fan this season is that the team was all-but written off at the start of the campaign, with good reason. General manager Marc Bergevin did next to nothing in the offseason, apart from trade captain Max Pacioretty for Tomas Tatar and prospect Nick Suzuki, despite the team’s glaring frailties. To make sure that this season isn’t a mere flash in the pan and is instead a sign of things to come, the Habs need to patch the gaps in the starting lines.

It seems incredibly unlikely that additions can be made to bring Montreal in line with three teams atop the Atlantic Division, but they can certainly solidify a place in the wild card places. They may be the ninth-rated team in the NHL betting odds to win the Eastern Conference at +1600, behind the Columbus Blue Jackets at +1400 and the Toronto Maple Leafs at +700, showing that the experts see them as finishing outside of the wild card places, but with some of the Metropolitan teams set to slide next season, the Habs can add enough pieces to make it to the playoffs next season.

The Montreal Canadiens are looking good on the contracts front, with only Jordan Weal, Nate Thompson, Jordie Benn, Christian Folin, and Antti Niemi becoming UFAs. Mike Reilly, Brett Kulak, Charles Hudon, Artturi Lehkonen, and Joel Armia become RFAs, but the Habs should have plenty of cap space to make some moves and spaces in the right positions to improve.

One of the most glaring needs, which has been a major need for many seasons, is a top-six center. Jesperi Kotkaniemi is on his way, and Danault is certainly performing better than expected as the top line center, but the team is certainly in need of a commanding who’s strong at both ends of the ice and will improve Montreal’s poor powerplay. As it stands, Matt Duchene or Kevin Hayes could be the centers to fill the role from the free agency, but the former is tipped to sign with the Blue Jackets.

Another dire need is at backup goaltender. With Carey Price in the crease, the backup role for the Canadiens isn’t seen as the most pressing area, but as Niemi’s seven goals against in 33 shots has shown, the Habs need a strong backup. They called up Charlie Lindgren towards the end of the season, and the hope is that he’ll be ready to take on the backup role next season.

The final, long-time need is that of a top-four defenseman. Jeff Petry is underrated and Shea Weber continues to be an elite-level defenseman, but Weber desperately needs a linemate of higher quality, and the powerplay could do with another competent blueliner. Jacob Trouba is set to become an RFA while his Jets teammate Tyler Myers may hit the open market; a deal for either Winnipeg blueliner would greatly benefit the Habs, but those deals seem unlikely.

Bergevin certainly has the future in mind and wants to build the team into being a contender, but if the roster stays on the same level coming into next season, it may not contend for the postseason with the Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, and New Jersey Devils all potentially pushing for the wild card places. Metro teams will slide, and some long-needed additions would go a long way towards securing a place in the playoffs while the team continues to develop.

There’s very little doubt that the Montreal Canadiens have enjoyed a much better than expected season. Sitting in the wild card places for much of the season, the Habs were expected to be battling for draft lottery odds at this point in the season; instead, they’re in the conversation for odds to win the Eastern Conference in the playoffs.

On paper, this is not a playoff-ready team as there are simply too many glaring weaknesses up and down the lines. But thanks to the defence pulling together both without Shea Weber and after his return, Carey Price putting in a season worthy of a Vezina Trophy nomination, and plenty of depth scoring, this team has proven that it all comes down to the performances on the night.

However, there’s still a long way to go in the season, and we are yet to realise the repercussions of the trade deadline fully. So, the question remains: what are the odds that the Montreal Canadiens will make it to the playoffs?

A battle raging in the east

At the 67-game mark, there appeared to be one Metropolitan place and two wild card places available in the Eastern Conference but five teams – four from the Metropolitan Division – vying for those places. The Carolina Hurricanes sat in the third divisional slot while the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens occupied the wild card places. The Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers were in hot pursuit.

The ESPN playoff chances table at the time foresaw the Habs edging the Blue Jackets and Flyers to land the final wild card place, giving Montreal a 75% chance to Columbus’ 61% and Philadelphia’s 7.8% chance. This is most likely down to the Flyers still being seven points out at the time as well as the Blue Jackets not putting together a decent run of games yet.

However, the experts who create the odds for the best NHL sportsbooks see the race as much closer. In the odds to win the Eastern Conference, they are pretty certain of the top seven contenders being the Lightning, Bruins, Maple Leafs, Capitals, Islanders, Penguins, and Hurricanes. In their last ten games, the Habs have five games on the road, five games against teams currently in divisional playoff places, and three against teams that could still be battling for a place in the playoffs: the Flyers, Hurricanes, and Blue Jackets. Those last ten games could realistically see the Habs yield a 2-6-2 record with the Canadian club not set to be the favourite in many of the contests.

Of the Canadiens, Flyers, and Blue Jackets, Columbus looks to have the easiest final ten games. Still adjusting to the monster trades around the deadline and effectively going all-in on this season, the Blue Jackets’ form is expected to turn and vault them into a wild card place. The Flyers are riding a tsunami of momentum which saw them go 17-4-2 from 10 January to 3 March – a record that was second only to the Bolts over that timeframe.

Montreal’s fate is in their own hands; if the Canadiens can beat the Flyers, Hurricanes, and Blue Jackets while defeating teams outside of the playoffs scrap and maybe stealing a point or two at the big teams over the last ten games, they’ll be right in the mix. However, the strength of the Blue Jackets and surge of the Flyers look to be too much for the Habs to fight off as it stands.
