GOHABS.com weekly wrap-up, Sept 16 2018

Mario Perrazzino

Last week, I posted the GOHABS.com weekly wrap-up blog at 11:30pm ET.  Just two hours later, the blog was obsolete because the Montreal Canadiens and Vegas Golden Knights announced on Twitter that the Montreal Canadiens had traded their captain Max Pacioretty to Vegas in return for Tomas Tatar, Nick Suzuki, and a 2019 2nd Round pick.

What followed was allot of he said, he said, on whether Pacioretty requested a trade, has Geoff Molson stated later that day at the Canadiens annual Golf tournament .  Fans will never know for certain who is right, but the answer lies somewhere in between.  Pacioretty might have requested a trade at some point in jest.  And Habs GM Marc Bergevin realizing a re-build or reset was the best thing that can happen to the organization, pulled the trigger on the deal to secure three parts in the trade; a current roster player, a top prospect, and a top 60 pick.

At the Golf tournament, Montreal Gazette’s Stu Cowan held a Q&A with team CEO Geoff Molson.

The jury is still out on what the Canadiens got in return.  Tatar is signed for 3 more seasons at $4.8M, and is a proven 20 goal scorer.  Nick Suzuki, is looking at making the club.  He is 19, plays centre, and has still has one more season of junior eligibility.  Incidentally, Tatar will wear #90, and Suzuki will wear #80.

  • With the Canadiens trading their captain, no announcement was made on who the next captain will be.  Many suggesting it will be either Brendan Gallagher or Shea Weber.  read up on Speculating on the next Habs captain
  • With Training camp set to begin Sept 13, Habs announced 8 cuts from their Rookie camp.  All eight were returned to their respective junior club:

  • Canadiens also announce the re-signing of restricted free-agent centre Michael McCarron to a one year, two-way deal worth $874,125 at the NHL level and $70,000 in AHL salary.
  • This week it was also revealed that advertising rates for Canadiens game on French television have fallen substantially since last season.  Ad rates are now 40% cheaper on both RDS/TVA Sports.  What normally went for $7,000 for a 30-second spot, now goes for $5,000.  This is attributed to projected lower audience viewership in the the 25-54 age demographic. • On September 13, Canadiens opened their training camp.  66 players were invited to camp.  See complete list.
  • On September 13, Canadiens also announced that UFA forward Joel Ward signed a PTO try-out with the club.  Ward played with San Jose last season.
  • Of the 67 players at camp, Shea Weber and Andrew Shaw are still not on the active roster.  Weber is out until December recovering from knee surgery.  And Shaw is recovering from knee surgery from end of last season.  Shaw is expected to return later in October.  Surprisingly, Paul Byron is back sooner than expected following off-season shoulder surgery.  See story here.
  • TSN announced they will carry 50 Habs game on their Regional feed (TSN2).
This season they will have a new play-by-play man Bryan Mudryk, with colour commentary from Dave Poulin, Mike Johnson and Craig Button.
(John Bartlett left TSN to join the Sportsnet crew).

The remaining 32 games will be on the National HNIC/CBC/SN properties.
On French side, RDS retains its 60 regional games, with TVA Sports picking up the remaining 22 National games.
  • On Sunday Sept 16, on the eve of the start of the training camp schedule, the Canadiens held their annual intra-squad game feature Red vs White.  White team beat the Red team by final score of 4-3.  Jonathan Drouin  picking up two goals for Team White.  Drouin, who played centre all of last season, played left wing centered by newcomers Max Domi and Joel Armia on right wing.  The trio have been together since camp opened on Friday.
  • Kirk Muller has signed a two-year contract extension with he Canadiens, continuing his role as associate coach of the Canadiens on Claude Julien’s staff.  It was also disclosed this week that last season Muller had to deal with a bout Lyme disease, and he’s speaking publicly about it.
  • Finally the Canadiens are set to start their 2018 training camp schedule on Monday September 17  vs New Jersey Devils, with tickets as low as $20 on the resale market.  The Canadiens home opener is Thursday October 11 vs LA Kings and  there is already speculation that the Canadiens’ consecutive sell-out streak during the regular season will come to an end, perhaps as early as second home game of the season Saturday October 13 vs Pittsburgh Penguins, or the third home game Monday October 15 vs Detroit Red Wings.

GOHABS.com Habs weekly wrap-up Sept 9, 2018

Here’s a weekly wrap of all things Habs.

  • Journal de Montreal’s Eric Evan Lemay writes about all the off-season administrative changes at the Montreal Canadiens front office and to a certain extent, Evenko, which is owner by le Groupe CH.  Gone are Donald Beauchamp (Communications) , Freed Steer (COO), Maryse Landry (HR).   Grand ménage chez le Canadien
  • At one point during the week it was all Max all the time.  Habs Captain Max Pacioretty is entering his final year of his contract.  There has been no contract offer from the Canadiens, nor discussions of offering him one.  Pacioretty has made it known that he will not discuss any contract extension once the season starts Oct 3.  TSN690’s Chris Nilan had Pacioretty on his Off The Cuff radio show where they discuss wide-ranging topics of whether Pacioretty ever asked to be traded in prior seasons, to whether Pacioretty would consider giving up the Captaincy if he re-signs with the team.  Listen here
  • Jonathan Drouin held his annual golf tournament Golf Tournament at Le Mirage in Terrebonne to raise money for the sick kids at  Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).  The event on Thursday Sept 6 raised $301,775.  Last year Drouin pledged to raise $5 million for the cause over the next 10 years, with a personal commitment of $500,000.  Bravo Jonathan!
  • The Jonathan Drouin golf tournament provided yet another awkward moment between Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin and team captain Max Pacioretty.  It was only after the suggestion by team’s Director of Public Relations Paul Wilson, that Bergen went to shake the hand of Pacioretty at the event.  Awkward….

  • The Canadiens Rookie camp opened this week.  Thirty players were invited included Habs top draft pick Jasperi Kotkaniemi (2018, 3rd pick overall).   The young rookies took part in a three team rookie Camp Showdown with Rookies from the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.  Habs rookies lost both games, 4-0 to the Sens, and 3-2 to the Leafs’ rookies.  Both games saw Habs players stretchered off the ice.  Jake Evans and Jarret Tyszka both made trips to the hospital following big hits they sustained.  Evans was cleared and now following concussion protocol.  Tyszka , who suffered a hit to the head, was taken to hospital for further evaulation.

Will the Habs score an Atlantic Division title again?

Will the Habs score an Atlantic Division title again?

Montreal finished 42 points behind Tampa Bay Lightning in the Atlantic Division during the 2017/18 season as 40 losses and a minus 55 goal difference left them near the back of the pack. It is fair to say that General Manager Marc Bergevin has his work cut out to assemble a team that can challenge again next season. Is there any chance of an Atlantic Division title next time around?

It has now been 25 years since the Habs lifted Lord Stanley’s mug, but there was cautious optimism ahead of last season that they could finally challenge in the Atlantic Division. The feel-good factor was short-lived though as Bergevin passed on the signing of veteran Andrei Markov, instead opting for Karl Alzner and David Schlemko. Eyebrows were also raised when Mikhail Sergachev was traded for Jonathan Drouin, while the loss of Alexander Radulov to the Stars also hurt.

The Canadiens didn’t get out of first gear during the regular season and ultimately failed to advance to postseason for the second time in three years. There is now time to take stock and plan for the future as the playoffs take center stage, but Habs fans will probably be frustrated that there is again a limited prospect pool and a full scale rebuild is unlikely to be on the cards.

However different scatters may have endocrine also and different starting points like fruitlessness and may require a more profound comprehension of pharmaceutical viagra on sale with respect to the endocrinologist to recognize and work in a joint effort with another authority (a gynecologist in instances of barrenness). It is important to do some research before taking any medication: Kidney problems Previous stroke High canadian pharmacy for viagra or low blood pressure If you are allergic to Tadalafil. Bergevin could try to land John Tavares in an attempt to paper over the cracks with a single excellent signing in the off-season. Carey Price and Shea Weber will return from injury in the coming months and are close friends of Tavares, which could help in pitching Montreal as the best destination for the talented center. The Habs are in a good position in terms of draft picks and cap space, so they will have room to maneuver over the summer.

If Tavares does join, Montreal could again be a dark horse pick for those betting on the NHL next season. That is not to say that all hope will be lost if that exciting deal does not come to fruition. They could instead target an overhaul of the roster, which would involve moving the current core group of veterans. Alternatively, Montreal may want to pursue the signing of Paul Stastny, and aim to retain their current crop of players.

The chances of an Atlantic Division title hinge on the draft. If the Habs do well, they could potentially be in the playoff shakeup next season. The return of a fit and firing Weber and Price will give the team the edge it missed during the previous campaign. There will also be hope that Jonathan Drouin and Max Pacioretty can settle into a pattern of play and find some chemistry, as the duo can always be relied on for rebounds.

Habs fans will always be dreaming of an Atlantic Division title and a potential Stanley Cup win, but expectations will be relatively low, regardless of what happens during the next four months. The 2018/19 NHL season will get underway in October.

What’s in a number? That’s a wrap for Canadiens 2017-18

Montreal Canadiens 2017-18 season will go down as one of the worst in club history.  In fact this season marked second-lowest point total in modern franchise history, and this is with loser points awarded!!

With many injuries plaguing the team, there was a revolving door of call-ups, waiver pick ups and more.

Below are the other set of players who made their Canadiens debut in 2017-18.

#20 Nicolas Deslauriers

Nicolas Deslauriers  came over from Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Zach Redmond, and sent to Laval.  A mid-season call-up from Laval, Deslauriers had a career-year.  Deslauriers chose #20, the most worn jersey # in club history, as 65 former players have worn it.  Ironically, Zack Redmond,  for whom Deslauriers was trade for,  wore it last in 2016-17.

#42 Byron Froese

Being short at centre (no pun intended), the Canadiens relied on Laval call-up Byron Froese.  Montreal is Froese’s third organization;  playing with Toronto and Tampa previously.  First time Froese wears #42 at the NHL level.  A number last worn the last two seasons by Sven Andrighetto.

#28 Mike Reilly

Doctors do recommend discount viagra this medicine to patients suffering from ED. #49 Logan Shaw

Logan Shaw was a waiver pickup from Anaheim, and no relation to Andrew Shaw.  Logan Shaw was given #49.  Only three players have worn #49 in Habs history prior to Logan Shaw; Luc Gauthier, Brian Savage and Mikael Bournival.

#58 Noah Juulsen

Noah Juulsen was the Canadiens’ top draft pick (26th overall) in the 2015 Entry Draft.  Juulsen was injured at start of the season and after rehab, spent the majority of the season in Laval (AHL).  With the Canadiens decimated by injuries in 2017-18, Juulsen was a late-season call up and surprised many.  Juulsen wore #58 throughout his development camp and rookie camp.  A number that stuck with him at the NHL level.  And Juulsen is in unique company. Only two other players have worn this number in franchise history.  David Desharnais, And Sven Andrighetto.

#45 Kerby Rychel

Kerby Rychel was picked up from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline in the trade that sent Tomas Plekanec to Toronto.  Rychel was given #45.  Worn previously by 7 former Habs.  Gilbert Dionne wore it for 5 seasons.  No. 45 was last worn  by Mark Barberio during the 2015-17 seasons.

#17 Rinat Valiev

Rinat Valiev too was acquired from Toronto in the Tomas Plekanec trade.  He didn’t see too much action with the Canadiens because he was injured in the first game he played with the club.  Valiev was given no, 17, a number worn by 50 other players before him.  The longest tenured Canadiens players to wear #17 include Rod Langway, Craig Ludwig, John LeClair, and Benoit Brunet.

Atlantic Division Race & Playoff Update

Atlantic Division Race & Playoff Update

Mario Perrazzino

There are just under 10 games to be played in the regular season, so the race is nearing the final stretch.

It’s looking pretty grim for the Habs playoffs hopes but it isn’t over yet. They are just 18 points behind New Jersey so if they win out in all nine games there is a chance at a wildcard berth.

Who’s in and who’s out?

The Atlantic Division is tough. So far, the three best teams in the Eastern Conference belong to this division. The Tampa Bay Lighting are mathematically locked in. The Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs are in second and third place respectively and are looking almost uncatchable by the rest of the division. Although technically, Florida could still catch the Maple Leafs with the remaining games … but they don’t need to. They are only a few points back from the Devils.

The Sens are 19 points back from the New Jersey Devils with a longshot of a chance. But the biggest loser so far is Buffalo. The Sabres are out of the hunt as the first team to be mathematically eliminated. Over in the Western Conference, the Vancouver Canucks and Arizona Coyotes are also non-factors.

Matchup outlook in the East

generic levitra pill But in general, it s really very unusual, at least during conservative sex with a recognizable mate. Isn’t that nice? We live in a country so free that our drug companies can charge us $350 for 20 tablets of levitra online uk, whereas in Canada you can get it for $90. These overnight delivery viagra muscles are under the control of the pills. I am an extreme (some might argue dangerous) decentralist. super active viagra If things continue down the same path that they are on, the Tampa Bay Lighting would face the NJ Devils in the first round. The Maple Leafs will face the Bruins —It should be noted that I also think that putting weaker teams deeper into the playoffs by forcibly eliminating four of the best teams in the first round is a huge flaw in the newer playoff system. The Blue Jackets are on track to face the Capitols and the Flyers could be facing the Penguins.

Loser points

You’ve gotta wonder how many times the habs played for the loser point. At 12 overtime losses, the Habs are tied for the most OTL in the league. And who is the only other team with 12? None other than the lowly Sabres.

I’m going to side-step here for just a second and mention that I am still opposed to the OTL point. The Canadiens have talent. Sure there have been some setbacks but if the option to play it safe didn’t exist would we be closer in the points race? It’s a moot point but food for thought nonetheless.

Checking the odds on the winners

I always like to have a look at the implied probability listed by Las Vegas. The Canadiens opened the season in Vegas and at online outlets like Bodog as one of the favorites to win the Atlantic Division. The early odds were the Lighting at +250 (2.5 to 1) and the Habs at +300 (3 to 1). So we know the potential was there and there should just be some fine-tuning to make a full-on playoff run next season.

When we check the current odds at Bodog, The Lighting are odds-on favorites to win the Eastern Conference at +220, followed by the Bruins at +350, the Pens at +500, and the Maple Leafs at +650.

Montreal Canadiens return to the outdoor game in the NHL 100 Classic

This will mark the fourth time the Montreal Canadiens participate in an outdoor game.

Just like the 2016 Winter Classic, the Canadiens introduced a new jersey design for this game.

2017 NHL 100 Classic Breakaway – Jersey

The Canadiens NHL100 Classic jersey design is very reminiscent of the white jersey the Canadiens first wore back in 1938.

Below are the jerseys the Canadiens wore at previous outdoor games.

The 2003 Heritage Classic jersey featured a replica of the Canadiens 1946 white jersey.

The 2011 Heritage Classic game, featured a replica of the 1957 Canadiens white jersey.

Both the 2016 and this year’s 2017 jerseys , although they take elements from the ckub’s storied history, are new jersey designs.

In case you are wondering, here is a replica of the jerseys Ottawa and Montreal wore 100 years ago in that game back on Dec. 19, 1917.  A game the Canadiens won 7-4.

Please note, there are still tickets available to NHL 100 Classic Game December 16 game.

Many people have asked why the Montreal Canadiens have yet to host an outdoor game.  Apparently there isn’t a venue big enough to satisfy the Montreal Canadiens and the NHL.  Both Molson Stadium and Stade Saputo fit over 20,000 spectators.  And Olympic Stadium has a permanent roof.

What’s in a Canadiens Number; 2017-18 edition

The start of the Montreal Canadiens 2017-18 season sees a semi overhaul on defence, and the arrival of top 6 forward Jonathan Drouin.

Gone are Andre Markov, Nathan Beaulieu, Bryan Flynn, Dwight King, and Steve Ott.

#92 Jonathan Drouin

The big splash acquisition in the off season was Jonathan Drouin.  Drouin wore #27 with Tampa, but went entirely with a new # with Montreal.  #92.  The only other Habs player to wear #92 was Steve Ott last season.

#83 Ales Hemsky

Ales Hemsky was a low risk UFA signing.  Hemsky has played with four different organizations.  All four teams (EDM, DAL, OTT and now MTL) he has worn #83.  And Hemsky too is only the second player to ever wear #83.  Eric Bertrand wore it for the 3 games he played with the Canadiens back in 2001.

#32 Mark Streit

This marked the second tour of duty of Mark Streit with the Canadiens.  He played with the Canadiens for 3 seasons (2005-08) when he wore #32.  Eleven different players wore #32.  Claude Lemieux wore if for his six seasons with the Canadens (1984-90).  Travis Moen wore it for five seasons (2010-15).  Streit and the Canadiens have since parted ways as Streit appeared in only 2 games before being released unconditionally.

#53 Victor Mete

Victor Mete was a surprise out of the Canadiens development camp, and he carried over his surprising play into training camp.  Enough to impress GM Marc Bergevin, and Mete made the team.  As with all rookies he was given  a number; #53.  Mete is the seventh player to wear #53.  Ryan White wore it longest for parts of five season (2010-14).

#22 Karl Azner

Karl Azner was the Canadiens big off-season UFA signing.  He opted for #22.  A number worn by 26 players in Habs history.  Most notable are John Ferguson 1964-71, and Steve Shutt 1973-85.  For trivia buffs, before Alzner, the last Habs player to wear #22 was Sergei Sergachev who wore it for the 4 games he appeared in October 2016.

#45 Joe Morrow

Joe Morrow was another depth defenceman UFA signing.  Morrow came from the Boston Bruins organization where he also wore #45.  Other Canadiens to wear #45 were: Gilbert Dionne 1990-94, Aaron Asham 1999-2002.

#21 David Schlemko

David Schlemko was acquired from the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.  The Canadiens is Schlemko’s sixth NHL organization.  And he went with an entirely different number;  #21.  A number worn by 33 other players.  Last worn last year briefly by Dwight King.  Two former Habs captains wore #21; Brian Gionta wore it for his five seasons with the Canadiens (2010-14), as did Guy Carbonneau for 11 seasons (1983-94).

Habs leap of faith

The start of the Montreal Canadiens’ 2017-18 season will be remembered as a season in flux for the team’s defense core.

Gone, by design or not are:

  • Andrei Markov (signed with KHL)
  • Alexei Emelin (lost to expansion draft to Las Vegas and then traded to Nashville)
  • Nathan Beaulieu (traded in off-season to Buffalo for a 2017 3rd Rnd Pick-  Scott Walford, D)

Who would have imagined that after last season, Habs would lose three regulars on defence. Four, if you include Sergei Sergachev, because everyone were anticipating Sergachev would crack the Canadiens lineup this season.  But Sergachev too was dealt in the off-season , to Tampa Bay in the Johnathan Drouin trade.

The Canadiens will once again look to Shea Weber to provide the leadership on the blue line.  In addition, the team will rely of UFA signing Karl Azner to play top-2 pairing.  Along with Jeff Petry and Jordie Benn.

Leaving NHL castoffs like Joe Morrow and Mark Streit (since released by the Canadiens) to partner with David Schlemko, who was acquired in a trade with Vegas Golden Knights.  Schlemko has been on Injured Reserve since gtraining camp.

But one wild card in all of this was the emergence of 19 year old junior player Victor Mete.  Although Mete has looked well in pre-season action and for the most part in the CAnadiens first 10 games, is he ready to grind out a season playing with the big boys?

Had the Canadiens not been so weak on defense this training camp, Mete would not have received all the attention he’ received.

Mete has already played 10 games this season.  This means he loses a year in entry level eligibility.  The next date on the Canadiens radar is 40 games.  If Victor mete is still on the Canadiens roster come Game #40, Mete’s 2017-18 season counts as one year towards unrestricted free-agency.

In the meantime, Mete was notified to find a home in Montreal.  And his mom from Woodbridge Ontario will move in with him.

Finally, we can conclude, after 5 full seasons as Habs GM, Marc Bergevin has completely overhauled the Canadien’s defense as these are all players Bergevin has brought.  And note, only Victor Mete was a Bergevin draft pick.
